AI Voice Cloning Family Emergency Scam
How to spot fake "family emergency" calls and what to do before sending money.
What this scam looks like
You get a call or voicemail that sounds like your child or grandchild. They say they are in trouble and need money right away for bail, a hospital bill, or travel.
Scammers can use AI tools to imitate a real voice from short audio clips found online.
Red flags to watch for
- They demand urgent payment right now.
- They say "don't tell anyone."
- They ask for gift cards, wire transfers, crypto, or payment apps.
- They refuse to let you hang up and call back.
- The number is unknown or does not match your saved contact.
Decision tree
If the call or message asks for urgent payment (gift cards, wire transfer, crypto, or payment app) → Stop. Do not send money or click any links. → Verify by calling the person using a number you already have saved (not a number the caller gives you). → Only then decide whether to act. A real emergency is still an emergency in a few minutes.
What to do in the moment
- Hang up, even if the voice sounds real.
- Call your family member on a number you already have.
- Call a second trusted person in your family to confirm.
- Ask a personal question only the real person would know.
- Do not send money until verification is complete.
Family safety setup (do this now)
- Create a family safe phrase that only close family knows.
- Set a rule: no urgent money transfers without direct verification.
- Limit public audio/video posting on social media when possible.
- Save key contacts in favorites so you can call quickly.
If you already sent money
- Contact your bank or payment app immediately and ask to stop or reverse the transaction.
- If gift cards were used, call the card company right away.
- Report to reportfraud.ftc.gov and ic3.gov.
- Keep screenshots, numbers, and timestamps for reports.
Quick script you can use
