Facebook for Seniors: Staying Connected with Family
See photos, share updates, and stay in touch with family. A simple guide to Facebook for beginners.
See photos, share updates, and keep in touch
Facebook is one of the most used social platforms among adults 50+. You can see what family and friends are up to, share your own photos and updates, and join groups. Here’s a simple guide to get started.
Creating an account
- Download the Facebook app or go to facebook.com.
- Enter your name, email or phone, and a password.
- Follow the steps to verify your account.
- Add a profile photo if you’d like.
Finding friends and family
Facebook may suggest people you know based on your contacts or email. You can also search by name. Send a friend request — when they accept, you’ll see their posts in your feed. Only add people you know and trust.
The News Feed
Your feed shows posts from friends and pages you follow. Scroll to see photos, updates, and links. You can like, comment, or share. To post something yourself, tap “What’s on your mind?” at the top and type or add a photo.
Privacy settings
Go to Settings → Privacy to control who sees your posts and profile. You can limit posts to friends only, hide your profile from search, and block people you don’t want to hear from. It’s worth reviewing these every so often.
Quick tips
- Be careful what you share. Don’t post sensitive info like your full address or travel plans.
- Don’t accept friend requests from people you don’t know.
- If you see something suspicious or get a strange message, you can block or report it.
