First-Time Smartphone or Tablet Setup

New phone or tablet? Step-by-step setup for accounts, Wi‑Fi, and the basics. No experience needed.

No experience needed — we’ll walk you through it

A new phone or tablet will guide you through setup when you first turn it on. Here’s what to expect and how to get started with the basics.

Turning it on

Hold the power button (usually on the side) until the screen lights up. Charge the device first if the battery is low. The first time you turn it on, a setup wizard will appear — follow the steps on screen.

Language and Wi‑Fi

Choose your language, then connect to Wi‑Fi. Select your home network and enter the password (often on a sticker on your router). Wi‑Fi lets you use the internet without using your phone’s data plan.

Apple or Google account

iPhone/iPad: Sign in with your Apple ID (or create one). This backs up your data and lets you download apps.

Android: Sign in with your Google account (or create one). Same idea — backups, apps, and sync.

You can skip some steps and add them later if you prefer.

The basics after setup

  • Home screen — The main screen with app icons. Swipe left or right to see more.
  • Settings — The gear icon. Use it to change Wi‑Fi, volume, display size, and more.
  • App Store / Google Play — Where you download new apps. Only use these — avoid downloading from websites.

Quick tips

  • Take your time. You can always go back to Settings later to change things.
  • Write down your Apple ID or Google password and keep it somewhere safe.
  • If you get stuck, ask a family member or contact tech support — setup help is common.
