Managing app and subscription payments

Why subscriptions pile up

Apps, streaming services, and other products often charge every month or year. It’s easy to forget what you signed up for — and deleting an app does not cancel its subscription. You have to cancel in the right place.

Where your subscriptions live

  • iPhone / iPad / Mac: Apple bills you. Manage everything in Settings (tap your name, then Subscriptions).
  • Android: Google Play bills you. Go to play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions or open the Play Store app → account → Subscriptions.
  • Streaming (Netflix, etc.): Sometimes you pay through Apple or Google; sometimes you pay the company directly. Check the email you got when you signed up.

How to cancel on Apple

  1. Open Settings → tap your name at the top → Subscriptions.
  2. Tap the subscription you want to cancel.
  3. Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
  4. If you don’t see a Cancel button, it may already be canceled.

You keep access until the end of the current billing period.

How to cancel on Google Play

  1. Go to play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions (or Play Store → account → Subscriptions).
  2. Tap Manage next to the subscription.
  3. Tap Cancel subscription, choose a reason if asked, and confirm.

You keep access until the end of the current billing period.

If you pay through a different company

Some subscriptions (e.g. Apple TV or HBO Max) might be billed through Apple on one device and Google on another. Cancel in the same place you’re being charged — check your bank or card statement to see who charges you, then go to that company’s website or app to cancel.

Tips to avoid surprise charges

  • Review your subscriptions every few months.
  • Turn on renewal or receipt emails so you see when you’re charged.
  • Before signing up, note whether it’s monthly or yearly and how to cancel.
