Setting Up a Doctor Video Appointment

How to join a telehealth visit: Zoom, Doxy.me, patient portals, and what to do before your appointment.

Many doctors now offer video appointments

You can see your doctor from home using your phone, tablet, or computer. Here’s how to join and what to do before your visit.

Before your appointment

  • Your doctor’s office will send you a link or instructions by email, text, or phone.
  • Make sure you have Wi‑Fi or mobile data and your device charged.
  • Test your camera and microphone before the visit.
  • Find a quiet, private place with good lighting.

Common platforms doctors use

Your doctor’s office will tell you which one they use. Most work similarly: you tap a link or enter a code to join.

  • Zoom — Very common. You may need to download the Zoom app first.
  • Doxy.me — Works in your browser; no app needed.
  • Google Meet — Often used with patient portals.
  • Patient portal — Some clinics have a “Join video visit” button inside their online portal.

Joining a Zoom visit

  1. If you don’t have Zoom, download it from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Tap the link in the email or text from your doctor’s office.
  3. If asked, enter the meeting ID and password (the office will provide these).
  4. Tap Join. You may wait in a “waiting room” until the doctor lets you in.

Joining a Doxy.me visit

Doxy.me usually works in your web browser — no app download needed.

  1. Tap the link from your doctor’s office (e.g. doxy.me/dr-smith).
  2. Type your name when asked.
  3. Allow camera and microphone when the browser asks.
  4. Wait for the doctor to start the visit.

Using a patient portal

Some clinics use a patient portal (like MyChart, FollowMyHealth, or their own system) for video visits.

  1. Log in to the portal with your username and password.
  2. Find your upcoming appointment.
  3. Click “Join video visit” or similar when it’s time.

Tip: If you forgot your portal password, use the “Forgot password” link or call the office for help.

On the day of your visit

  • Join a few minutes early in case of setup issues.
  • Have your medication list and any questions ready.
  • If you can’t connect, call the office — they can help or switch to a phone call.

Quick checklist before your video visit

  • Device charged and connected to Wi‑Fi
  • Camera and microphone working
  • Quiet, private space with good lighting
  • Link or instructions from the doctor’s office handy
