What is electronic signing?

Services like DocuSign let you sign documents online instead of printing, signing by hand, and mailing or scanning. You get an email with a link, open it, and sign with a few taps or clicks. The other party gets the signed document automatically.

Is it safe and legal?

Yes. DocuSign and similar tools use strong encryption and meet strict security standards. In the U.S., electronic signatures are legally valid under the ESIGN Act and state laws. Each signature is tied to an audit trail so it can be verified.

When someone sends you a document to sign

  1. Open the email from the sender (doctor, bank, landlord, etc.).
  2. Click the link in the email to open the document.
  3. You may need to create a free account or sign in if you already have one.
  4. Follow the prompts: you might need to type your name, draw a signature, or tap to place a pre-made signature.
  5. Tap or click Finish or Done. The sender is notified and receives the signed document.

You can sign from a phone, tablet, or computer — no printer needed.

When to be careful

  • Only open links you expect. If you get a “sign this document” email out of the blue, don’t click. Contact the sender by phone or through a number or website you look up yourself.
  • Check the sender’s email address to make sure it’s really from the company or person you know.
  • If the message is urgent or asks for payment or personal details beyond what you’d normally give, pause and confirm with the organization by calling them directly.

Free for signers

If someone sends you a document through DocuSign, you can sign it for free. You don’t need a paid plan to be the signer.
