TikTok Isn't Just for Kids: A Beginner's Guide

Short videos, trends, and how to get started. TikTok for beginners 50+.

Short, fun videos on any topic

TikTok is known for short videos — cooking, crafts, comedy, music, and more. More people 50+ are using it. Here’s how to get started.

Getting the app

Download TikTok from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android). Open it and you can start watching right away — no account needed to browse.

How to browse

Videos play one after another. Swipe up for the next video. Swipe down to go back. Tap the screen to pause or play. Use the search icon to find topics you like (e.g. “recipes,” “gardening,” “travel”).

Liking and saving

Tap the heart to like a video. Tap the bookmark to save it to a collection. You’ll need an account to like and save.

Creating videos (optional)

You can also make your own short videos. Tap the + button, record, add music or effects, and post. Many people just watch — that’s fine too.

Quick tips

  • Set a time limit if you find it easy to watch for too long.
  • Use search to find content that matches your interests.
  • Be careful what you share — only post what you’re comfortable with others seeing.
