WhatsApp for Grandparents: Staying Connected Globally

Free video calls and texts worldwide. Set up WhatsApp to stay in touch with family near and far.

WhatsApp lets you text and video call for free — even across countries

If your family uses WhatsApp, you can join them. It works over the internet, so there’s no extra cost for international calls or texts. Usage among people 50+ has been growing — it’s a great way to stay connected.

Downloading and setting up WhatsApp

  1. Open the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android).
  2. Search for WhatsApp and tap Install.
  3. Open WhatsApp and enter your phone number.
  4. You’ll receive a verification code by text. Enter it when asked.
  5. Add your name and optionally a photo.

Sending texts on WhatsApp

WhatsApp works like regular texting, but over the internet. The person you’re messaging must also have WhatsApp.

  • Tap the chat or new message icon.
  • Choose a contact or enter a phone number (with country code for international).
  • Type your message and tap send.

Making video calls

Video calls on WhatsApp are free and work well for staying in touch with family abroad.

  • Open a chat with the person.
  • Tap the video call icon at the top.
  • They’ll get a call — when they answer, you can see and hear each other.

Tip: Use Wi‑Fi for video calls to avoid using mobile data.

Voice calls (no video)

You can also make a regular phone call through WhatsApp — just tap the phone icon instead of the video icon. It’s free over Wi‑Fi or data.

Family group chats

Create a group for your family so everyone can share updates, photos, and plans in one place.

  • Tap New group and add family members.
  • Name the group (e.g. “Smith Family”).
  • Everyone in the group can send messages and see replies.

Safety tips

  • Only accept contact requests from people you know.
  • Be wary of messages from unknown numbers — especially if they ask for money or personal info.
  • Don’t click links in messages from strangers.

Quick tips

  • Both you and the other person need WhatsApp — it won’t work with regular texting.
  • For international contacts, include the country code (e.g. +1 for US, +44 for UK).
  • You can send photos and voice messages too — tap the microphone or camera icon in the chat.
