Wi‑Fi and Connectivity Troubleshooting

Fix common Wi‑Fi problems: reconnecting, weak signal, forgotten passwords. Simple steps for home networks.

Most Wi‑Fi problems can be fixed with a few simple steps

If your phone, tablet, or computer won’t connect to the internet, try these steps before calling for help.

Step 1: Turn Wi‑Fi off and on

This often fixes connection issues.

On your phone or tablet:

  • Open SettingsWi‑Fi.
  • Turn Wi‑Fi off, wait a few seconds, then turn it on again.

On your computer:

  • Click the Wi‑Fi icon in the taskbar (bottom-right on Windows, top-right on Mac).
  • Turn Wi‑Fi off, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on.

Step 2: Restart your router

The router is the box that brings internet into your home. Restarting it often fixes connection problems.

  1. Unplug the power cable from the router (and modem, if they’re separate).
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in and wait 1–2 minutes for the lights to stop blinking.
  4. Try connecting again on your device.

Weak or slow connection

  • Move closer to the router — Wi‑Fi is stronger when you’re near it.
  • Remove obstacles — Walls, metal, and appliances can block the signal.
  • Place the router centrally — If possible, put it in a central spot in your home.
  • Reduce interference — Microwaves and cordless phones can affect Wi‑Fi. Move away from them when using the internet.

Forgot your Wi‑Fi password

The password is often on a sticker on the bottom or back of your router.

  • Look for a label that says “Wi‑Fi password”, “Network key”, or “WPA key”.
  • If you changed it and don’t remember, you may need to reset the router (check the manual) or contact your internet provider.

Connecting to a new Wi‑Fi network

When you’re at home, at a family member’s house, or in a café:

  1. Open SettingsWi‑Fi.
  2. Tap the network name (you may need to ask for it and the password).
  3. Enter the password when asked.
  4. Tap Join or Connect.

Safety tip: Avoid using public Wi‑Fi for banking or entering passwords. Use your phone’s mobile data instead if possible.

Quick tips

  • Try turn off/on and restart router first — they fix most issues.
  • If one device works but another doesn’t, the problem is likely with that device.
  • If nothing works, your internet service may be down. Call your provider to check.
