AI Reading Assistants: Apps That Read Anything Aloud to You
Reading fine print on a phone screen, a prescription label, a restaurant menu, or a letter can be exhausting — especially in poor lighting or when your eyes are tired. AI reading assistants can change that.
These tools use your phone's camera or built-in software to read text aloud to you, instantly. Here's what's available in 2026 and how to use it.
Built-In Reading Features You Already Have
Before downloading anything new, check what's already on your phone.
iPhone: Speak Screen & Speak Selection
Your iPhone can read any text on the screen out loud.
To turn it on:
- Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content
- Turn on Speak Screen (swipe down with two fingers from the top of any screen to hear it read)
- Turn on Speak Selection (highlight any text, then tap Speak)
- Adjust the Speaking Rate slider to a comfortable speed
To use it:
- Open any webpage, email, or document
- Swipe down from the top with two fingers — your phone reads the entire page
- Or highlight a word or paragraph and tap Speak
Android: TalkBack & Select to Speak
Settings → Accessibility → Select to Speak
Once enabled, tap the accessibility icon on screen, then tap any text to have it read aloud.
Reading Physical Text with Your Camera
These apps use your phone's camera to read physical text — printed documents, labels, menus, mail, and more.
Microsoft Seeing AI (Free — iPhone)
Originally designed for people with visual impairments, Seeing AI is one of the most powerful free tools available:
- Point your camera at any text and it reads it immediately
- Has modes for: short text, documents, handwriting, product barcodes, and even describing scenes
- Reads prescription labels, business cards, mail, and books
- Available free from the App Store
Google Lookout (Free — Android)
Similar to Seeing AI, Lookout reads text through your camera:
- Point at any printed text and it reads it aloud
- Works with documents, labels, and handwritten notes
- Available free from Google Play
Apple Live Text (Built into iPhone camera)
If your iPhone is running iOS 15 or later, Live Text is already built in:
- Open your Camera app
- Point it at any text
- A text icon appears in the bottom right corner — tap it
- The text is highlighted and you can copy it, look it up, or tap the speaker icon to have it read
Listening to Articles and Web Pages
Siri (iPhone) and Google Assistant (Android)
For websites and articles, you can simply ask your assistant:
- "Hey Siri, read this page to me"
- "Hey Google, read this article"
Apple Books and Kindle Auto-Narration
Both Apple Books and the Kindle app can read ebooks aloud:
- Apple Books: Open a book → tap the menu → Listen
- Kindle: Open a book → tap the menu → Word Runner or enable text-to-speech in accessibility settings
Pocket (pocketapp.com)
Save articles to read later, then have Pocket read them to you while you walk, cook, or rest. Free plan available.
