Making Text Bigger: Font Size, Display Zoom, and Contrast on Your Phone
Small text on a phone screen is one of the most common frustrations for anyone — and one of the easiest things to fix. You don't need a new phone or a trip to the store. A few changes in your settings can make everything significantly easier to read.
This guide covers the key adjustments for both iPhone and Android.
Make Text Bigger
On iPhone
- Open Settings
- Tap Accessibility
- Tap Display & Text Size
- Tap Larger Text
- Toggle on Larger Accessibility Sizes
- Drag the slider to the right to increase text size
You can also adjust text size system-wide with a quick shortcut:
- Settings → Control Center
- Add Text Size to your Control Center
- Now you can adjust text size instantly by swiping down from the top-right corner of your screen
On Android
- Open Settings
- Tap Accessibility (on some phones it may be under Display)
- Tap Font size or Font size and style
- Drag the preview slider to make text larger
- Tap Apply or the changes apply automatically
Make Everything Bigger (Not Just Text)
Sometimes you want to make icons, buttons, and everything on screen larger — not just the text.
On iPhone — Display Zoom
- Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size
- Under Display Zoom, choose a larger size
Or use the dedicated Display Zoom setting:
- Settings → Display & Brightness → Display Zoom
- Choose Larger Text mode
- Tap Set and confirm
This makes the entire screen easier to see, not just text.
On Android — Display Size
- Settings → Accessibility → Display size (may also be under Display settings)
- Move the slider toward the + end to make everything larger
Increase Contrast
If text looks faded or hard to distinguish from the background, increasing contrast can help significantly.
On iPhone
- Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size
- Turn on Increase Contrast
- Turn on Bold Text
- Turn off Transparency (reduces blurred/translucent backgrounds that can make text harder to read)
On Android
- Settings → Accessibility
- Look for High Contrast Text and toggle it on
- Some phones also offer Color Correction settings if you have color vision differences
Reduce Eye Strain: Night Mode and Blue Light Filters
If you use your phone at night or find the screen harsh on your eyes, these settings help:
iPhone — Night Shift
- Settings → Display & Brightness → Night Shift
- Toggle on Scheduled and set times (e.g., 9pm to 7am)
- Or manually enable it until tomorrow
iPhone — True Tone
If available on your iPhone model, True Tone automatically adjusts the display to match your environment's lighting. It's usually on by default.
Settings → Display & Brightness → True Tone
Android — Eye Comfort / Night Mode
- Settings → Display
- Look for Night Mode, Eye Comfort Shield, or Blue Light Filter (name varies by phone brand)
- Toggle it on or set a schedule
Zoom In on Anything
For moments when you need to zoom into a specific area of the screen:
iPhone — Magnifier
- Triple-click the side button (or Home button on older iPhones) to open Magnifier, which turns your phone into a magnifying glass
- Or go to: Settings → Accessibility → Magnifier to set this up
iPhone — Zoom Feature
This zooms into any part of the screen at any time:
- Settings → Accessibility → Zoom
- Toggle Zoom on
- Double-tap with three fingers to zoom in/out
Android — Magnification
- Settings → Accessibility → Magnification
- Turn it on and choose how to activate it (triple-tap or a button shortcut)
