How to Record and Send Voice Messages Instead of Typing
Typing on a small phone screen isn't everyone's favorite activity — especially if you have arthritis, find the keys hard to hit accurately, or simply prefer speaking to writing. Voice messages are a great alternative that most messaging apps already support.
Here's how to send voice messages on the most popular apps.
Why Voice Messages Are Great
- Faster than typing — speak naturally instead of hunting for letters
- More expressive — your tone and personality come through
- Hands-free — record while cooking, walking, or relaxing
- No typos — no autocorrect mishaps
- The recipient can listen at their own pace and replay if needed
Sending Voice Messages on iMessage (iPhone)
iMessage has built-in audio messages that send automatically.
How to record:
- Open a conversation in the Messages app
- Tap and hold the microphone icon on the right side of the text bar
- Speak your message while holding
- Release to stop recording
- A preview appears — tap the play button to listen back
- Tap the send arrow to send, or the X to delete and try again
Note: Audio messages in iMessage automatically delete after 2 minutes to save space, unless you tap Keep after receiving one.
Sending Voice Messages on WhatsApp
WhatsApp has excellent voice message support and is great for international families.
How to record:
- Open a conversation in WhatsApp
- Tap and hold the microphone icon on the right side of the text bar
- Speak your message
- Release to send immediately
To preview before sending:
- Slide your finger up while holding the microphone — this locks recording mode
- You can then stop, preview, and decide whether to send or delete
WhatsApp voice messages are not deleted automatically — they stay in the conversation indefinitely.
Sending Voice Messages on Facebook Messenger
- Open a conversation in Messenger
- Tap the microphone icon (you may need to tap the + button first to find it)
- Tap and hold to record
- Release to send
Using Your Phone's Voice-to-Text Instead
If you'd rather the message be sent as text (so the recipient can read it), use your phone's built-in voice-to-text feature:
On iPhone:
- Tap the text field in any messaging app
- Tap the microphone icon on the keyboard (bottom row)
- Speak — your words are converted to text automatically
- Review and tap send
On Android:
- Tap the text field in any messaging app
- Tap the microphone icon on the keyboard
- Speak your message
- Review and tap send
This is also useful for dictating emails when typing feels slow.
Tips for Clear Voice Messages
- Speak at a normal pace — no need to slow down dramatically
- Hold the phone close but not directly over your mouth
- Find a quiet spot — background noise can make messages hard to hear
- Keep messages focused — one topic per message is easier to respond to
- Say goodbye or end clearly — a natural ending lets the listener know you're done
Voice messages are perfect for longer, heartfelt messages — the kind that feel awkward to type but natural to say. Many people find receiving a voice message more personal than a text.
